  1. THE DRAGON OF THE ISHTAR GATE 4B - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "THE DRAGON OF THE ISHTAR GATE, by L. Sprague de Camp, published by Donning in 1982.

    Although this is a separate drawing, it is the right half of a double page illustration, see item 173 for the left side drawing.

    I have always thought that when a story is illustrated, the artwork should at least be equal to, or improve upon, the written images by the author. The artwork of some illustrators matches up so well with certain author's stories that when I think of one, I also think of the other;

    When I think of R.E. Howard's Conan stories I think of Frank Frazetta's Conan paperback cover paintings.

    When I think of Abe Merritt's stories I think of Virgil Finlay's fine pointillist magazine drawings.

    When I think of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels I think of J. Allen St. John's classic book dust jacket paintings and interior drawings.

    And when I think of L. Sprague de Camp's stories I remember the marvelous and unique style of Edd Cartier's magazine illustrations.

    You probably have similar match-ups in your mind.
